How To Watch Porn On Your Phone — The Right Way

$
0
0

We use our phones for everything these days. If that includes watching porn, don't worry: You're in very good company. There's still a stigma around phone porn usage, however. Even if you're a proud watcher, you may not want to advertise the fact right on your home screen.

In truth, that would be tough to do, anyway. There's no porn section of the App Store. And while the App Store and Google Play include plenty of apps with mature, sexy content, outright porn is prohibited in both markets. But that's okay — there are ways around it and ways to make the experience safer and less clunky.

Whether you regularly use your phone to watch porn or you've merely thought about it, there are things you can do to make that experience better. Read on for our best tips for watching porn on your handset.

Clear Your Cookies

Ghostery is a secure web browser that helps you ensure you're not leaving behind a digital footprint. With one click, you can easily clear your cache and cookies after visiting a porn site.

Keep Multiple Tabs Open

No matter where you are watching or which browser you're using, it's always a good idea to have some less, erm, provocative websites open in separate tabs. That way, if someone happens to walk into the room, you can easily switch pages.

Photo: PornHub.

Use An App For Private Photo Storage

If you'd rather browse titillating photos over videos (and you want to save those images), you'll need an app such as Private Photo Vault(free on iOS). This app password-protects your personal photo albums, so no one else can come across them by accident. The app also has a built-in web browser that lets you save photos (and videos) to one of these private folders.

Photo: Private Photo Vault.

Use An Ad Blocker

Porn sites are known for their many pop-up ads. Accidentally clicking on one could lead to an unfortunate virus for your phone — not exactly something you want to get while watching porn. Protect yourself by downloading the free app AdblockPlus. This will give you more control over the types of ads you see (you can allow "acceptable ads" that the app deems nonintrusive, or block ads altogether) and boosts your privacy and safety.

Photo: AdblockPlus.

Use A Secure Web-Browsing App

To make sure your connection is secure and private, try an app such as Anonymous Deep Web Browser for Android. The app gives you an anonymous IP address so that other sites can't see your information. It will also clear your search history and has ad blocking support — a major bonus for porn sites which always litter your screen with pop-ups.

Photo: Google Play.

Browse In Private

The easiest way to watch porn on your phone is with your browser, but you don't want your search history trailing behind you. To solve that issue, search in private. On Apple's Safari, you can do this by tapping the plus sign for a new browser tab and then tapping Private in the lower-left-hand corner. When you're done, close out of the tab, un-tap Private, and whatever sites you visited should stay private.

Photo: Courtesy Apple.

Browse In Incognito

You can do this in Chrome, too — just as you would on the desktop. Just head to the settings button in the upper right (this is the same whether you're on iOS or Android) and tap "New Incognito Tab." Browse to your heart's content. When you're done, tap the tabs icon, located next to the settings button, and close out of your Incognito tabs.

Employ A Bedside Dock

The one downside to the convenience of using your phone as your porn player of choice: It requires your hands. If you'd prefer to go hands-free, grab a dock you can position on your nightstand or coffee table. Twelve South's HiRise dock is a great option — it starts at $25.

Photo: Courtesy Amazon.

Download A Third-Party App Store

Android users have another option here: Downloading a third-party app market, such as Aptoide. Now, downloading a third-party app store comes with some risks, namely, that the apps haven't been vetted by Google. This means it's possible you could end up with a nasty piece of malware on your phone. However, Aptoide scans many of its apps for viruses and the market is recommended by Android Authority, so it's not completely sketch. Why download a market such as Aptoide? Because it's not regulated by Google, it's got porn apps — plenty of 'em.

Photo: Courtesy Aptoide.

Cumdroid

Or, you can download a title such as Cumdroid. Android-phone owners can download it for free or upgrade it with a $5 purchase to go ad-free and gain the ability to download videos. It sources videos from YouPorn, XVideos, and xHamster, among other sites, and perhaps surprisingly, also has a pleasant user interface.

Photo: Courtesy Cumdroid.

Pornhub

If you've got an Android device, you're in luck: You can now download Pornub's app. To get it, you'll have to lower your security settings: Go to Menu, System Settings, Security, and then check the box allowing downloads from "Unknown Sources." Once you've downloaded the app, we'd recommend unchecking that box again. Downloading an app this way does open up your phone to malware, so proceed with caution.

Photo: Courtesy Pornhub.

Add A Site To Your Homescreen

iPhone owners have no need to fret. Just because PornHub isn't in the App Store doesn't mean you can't still add it to your homescreen: You can add shortcuts to your favorite websites on your homescreen and they look just like app icons.

To do this, navigate to the website of your choice (I picked Refinery29.com for this example, naturally), then tap the share button at the bottom of the screen. Scroll right and tap "Add to Home Screen." From there, you can customize the name of the app and what URL the shortcut goes to. So, while the URL may direct to your favorite porn site, you could label the app "Puppy Videos" or "Productivity App" to throw any iPhone snoops off your trail.

Photo: Courtesy Apple.

Use A Folder

For an added layer of protection against prying eyes, store those shortcuts in a folder. We recommend naming it something dull and unremarkable. "Websites" could do.

Photo: Courtesy Apple.

Use YOUR Phone Only

If you're lucky enough to have a phone comped to you by the company you work for, kudos — just make sure what you do on there stays professional. Do not watch porn (or send sexts, or take scandalous photos) with a work device — even in Incognito Mode.

Photo: Courtesy Google.

Don't Browse In Public

And it should go without saying: Don't browse in public. You may think no one can see your screen while you're huddled in seat 24C of United Airlines flight 1649, but chances are yes, someone will glimpse the action on your phone at some point. Save it for when you're really, truly in private (or with someone who wants to watch it with you).

Photo: Courtesy Apple.

Clean Your Screen

And when you're done, it's not a bad idea to clean your screen using something like Whoosh! (which starts at $7). Your phone can harbor a variety of bacteria, after all.

Maisie Williams Wishes You'd Notice Her Latest Body Ink

Maisie Williams, the adorable Brit known for playing Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, is wondering why no one has noticed her new ankle tattoo. Considering the media's careful attention to celebrity ink — to which we happily plead guilty — it is surprising that no one took note. Nevertheless, somehow her body art escaped Twitter's eagle eye, and that has Williams's knickers in a twist.

"Someone gonna spot my other tattoo yet or what..." the actress tweeted, upon which Twitter users immediately took the bait. Ask the internet to find a tattoo? Oh, they'll find a tattoo. One user, @alessia, quickly responded with a photo of the ink.

"I did, a long time ago," she noted. Now that's a fan. After all, she noticed your tattoo before we did. Below, observe the fabled tattoo.

The ink depicts two tidy Japanese Kanji characters. According to Teen Vogue, the phrase translates to "adventure," or a version of it. So, this whole time, Williams has been wearing adventure on her ankle and we didn't even notice — despite our excitement over her last matching ink with co-star Sophie Turner in September.

So, a few words for Williams: Next time you get a tattoo, give us a call. We'll happily take note.

If Rainbow Brite Were A Club Kid, She’d Wear These

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick

People had a LOT of feelings about this category. It was neck and neck between three different lipsticks, but in the end Anastasia won by a nose. Or a lip, if you will. The pigment magically looked just as vibrant on the lips as it did in the tube, it was so opaque that one coat was all you needed, and the matte finish made lips look almost velveteen.

Halle — a longtime Anastasia fan — was enamored with the dark Sad Girl shade. “One layer and it can be a cute natural berry, but if you want to darken it up you just do another layer and it can be cool for a night event.”

Eyeshadow We Own In About 50 Different Colors

ColourPop Super Shock Shadows

Actually, if we’re going to be technical, ColourPop’s shade array is closer to 100. But what really blew our minds was the actual formula. It felt like a cream and swiped on just as smoothly, but was actually a long-wear powder.

Martin and Marshall were both impressed with the color array. “At $5 an eyeshadow, you can build an incredible palette with these,” said Martin. Mars loved the color payoff and shimmer, while Ess said what we were all thinking: “To be blatantly honest...they're rich AF.”

We did notice that these shadows have a tendency to crack in the pot after a few uses, but here’s their brilliance: Because of the texture, you can actually just smush them back together.

Hide-Anything (Seriously, Anything) Concealer

Glossier Stretch Concealer

Glossier has been consistently killing it in the skin-care game, but it was the launch of this enticingly named cover-up that made us sit up and take notice. The stretch part of Stretch Concealer is what made this one stand out. Instead of sitting on top of your skin in a cakey patch, it features elastic micro-waxes that move with your skin, so you don’t have to worry that the concealer you plopped on top of that surprise pimple is going to crack up.

Mars didn’t hesitate to give this one their stamp of approval. “It doesn't have an ashy-matte finish and can just be worn as a base. It’s sheer, yet buildable and gives off a dewy finish.” Czuleger seconded the dewy effect, and added, “It’s a high-pigment, creamy formula that clings to the skin as promised.” McIntyre simply said, “There’s a reason it keeps selling out.”

The Red Lipstick Everyone Should Wear

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Matte Lipstick In Lady Balls

With a name like Lady Balls, it better be good. And more than half of our judges thought it was worthy of its ballsy street cred, saying everything from, “It’s super-pigmented and has a velvety finish to it,” (Mars), to “Amazing, vibrant, opaque pigment, and this shade of red will flatter every skin tone!” (Marshall).

What makes it worthy of the praise is the trifecta of benefits it bequeaths. Yes, there’s that gorgeous color, but it’s also hiding a few other secrets behind that lush, suede finish. There’s the infusion of hyaluronic-acid spheres, avocado oil, and vitamin E to keep your lips hydrated; the staying power of a stain; AND a stealthy plumping effect. Which is why we agreed wholeheartedly with Ess when she said: “This was SO epic in every way. I'm throwing away every other red I have. This is my new go-to.”

Mascara So Legit, Everyone Will Want To Know What It Is

Gucci Infinite Length Mascara

As much as we love a great drugstore mascara, there was something about this luxury wand that put a twinkle in our judges’ eyes. It stretches lashes thanks to a resin-and-polymer formula, elongating your fringe. “It goes on smooth, but doesn’t feel crunchy,” says McIntyre. “It’s the very definition of fluttery lashes, and one of the first mascaras I’ve tried that does not smudge. At all. Ever.” Czuleger was a fan of the ultra-black hue and its versatility, while Marshall had rave reviews for the brush. “I love that the wand really gets to the base of the lashes and sweeps along the entire length for great definition without smudging!”

Budge-Proof, Smudge-Proof, Life-Proof Eyeliner

Urban Decay 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil

This nifty liner from Urban Decay goes where no liner has gone before: your waterline. Sure, you’ve probably applied eye pencils to your waterline well before this existed. But we also bet that you have encountered the problem of them drying out your eyes and causing them to tear up, effectively creating a flood of pigmented tears, or looked in the mirror midway through the day and saw your carefully applied liner had migrated down to somewhere near your cheeks. Featuring a creamier formula than UD’s already very creamy 24/7 pencils, it goes on like satin — so it won’t irritate your easily irritated eyeballs — and locks in place. Like, does not move. No color-migration here.

Martin was an instant fan. “What I love about this formula is how dark it stays on the waterline after long wear in the heat and in the water.” Added McIntyre, “I’m obsessed with the nude Walk of Shame shade — and not just for the name. A quick swipe of that on my bottom waterline, and my eyes look less red and somehow more awake. Like the type of person who has her shit together, even though I’m missing an earring and not totally sure if I’m wearing underwear or not.”

Best Under-$20 Makeup Buy

Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy Lip Tin

Okay, this is technically not the most revolutionary product out there. It is Vaseline, after all — one of the OG beauty products. But our judges could not be swayed in their affection for this stuff. The soft tint, superior lip-smoothing, and retro-cool packaging gave this one the edge.

It was, surprisingly, a real hit with our youngest judges. “My lips felt instantly moisturized, and it smells and tastes like raspberries and roses,” mused Mars. Added Halle, “It feels really good. It adds the pink that you want from a lipstick, [without being] dry.” Proof that sometimes the best isn’t necessarily

the flashiest.

Reader's Choice

Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer Murumuru Butter Bronzer

It was a close competition, but this moisturizing bronzer inched ahead of the pack to claim our Readers' Choice award. With a nutrient-rich tri-butter formula (made up of vitamins, fatty acids, and Brazilian-rainforest all-stars murumuru, cupuaçu, and tucuma), smooth and creamy application, and the tropical glow it bestows, it's easy to see why.

The Topcoat That Will Make Your Manicure Last Longer Than An Hour

Chanel Le Gel Coat Long-Wear Top Coat

Faux-gel topcoats are the new big thing in nail care, and it’s easy to see why. “I love the cushiony, shiny look a gel manicure gives me, but I hate how it destroys my nails whenever I remove it,” lamented McIntyre. The sunlight-activated polish from Chanel is the perfect blend of long-wear and shine, without the nail torture. “My mani lasted a full week without chips and looked glossier than normal,” said Czuleger. “Great way to get gel benefits without the damage.”

Perfume We Can’t Stop Sniffing

Maison Martin Margiela Replica Lipstick On

The concept of this fragrance alone would have been enough to win. The Replica scents aren’t made to smell like a certain ingredient, but rather to be reminiscent of a moment in time. Lipstick On is a scent meant to evoke a classic glamour girl applying lipstick in her boudoir before a night out. As McIntyre put it, “It somehow smells like nothing and everything all at once. I could picture the scene in my head and feel like I was there whenever I spritzed it.”

As romantic as that sounds, it does have actual notes that create that olfactive painting. Iris, galbanum, vanilla bourbon, and tonka bean give the scent its intoxicating femininity. Said Halle, “You don’t smell something like that a lot. It’s something different and cool, and it will make you, as an individual, stand out.”

Hairstylist Whose Instagram We Can’t Stop Stalking

Lacy Redway

While there are plenty of insanely talented hairstylists out there, sadly many of them don’t know how to work with all hair textures. And then, there’s Lacy Redway. A hair savant since the tender age of 14, Redway spent her formative years braiding at a Black hair salon, then moved on to NYC to assist some of the biggest names in the biz at the time. Now, Redway is a superstar in her own right, working with everyone from Uzo Aduba and Danielle Brooks to Olivia Palermo and Lady Gaga.

She made it very easy for the judges to love her — her down-to-earth attitude and easygoing nature lighten the mood of everyone she works with and earn her all of the respect. Said fellow stylist Ess, “The best. This girl is just killing the game, and she is UNREAL talented. Not to mention, the happiest, cutest girl alive.”

Makeup Artist We Most Want To Touch Our Faces

Robin Black

Her website may be Beauty Is Boring, but Black is anything but. An accomplished photographer and makeup artist with an eye for unique faces and a playful sensibility, Black can easily switch from high-fashion editorial, to cool-girl style, to completely bonkers in a beautiful way. “She’s genuinely innovative — one of the few artists who successfully marries wearability with innovation,” said Whitefield-Madrano.

Ess, who works with Black frequently, had mad love for her beauty partner-in-crime. “I LOVE Robin, and she's the true definition of a creative genius. She doesn't rip off other artists — she creates and is so original.” Gushed McIntyre, “I can get lost on her site, looking at all the amazing ways she uses makeup to tell a story. My dream would be to just sit in her studio and let her go nuts with makeup. I would treasure those photos for eternity.”

Social Media Supernovas

Jessica Matlin & Jennifer Goldstein, Fat Mascara Podcast

We had a lot of contention surrounding many of the categories — but this wasn’t one of them. Matlin and Goldstein hold the unique honor of being the only winners who garnered a unanimous vote by our panel. The two beauty editors (Matlin works at Teen Vogue and Goldstein at Marie Claire) have an insatiable interest in beauty, access to the coolest names in the industry, all of the knowledge, and seem to be having a blast every time we tune in. Their joy and curiosity are infectious.

Said McIntyre, “Knowing these two in person, I can wholeheartedly say that they not only know their shit, they cover some of the most interesting topics in beauty with some of the best guests. And you can tell they are having a good time, which makes it impossible not to smile when you listen in.” Added Whitefield-Madrano, “They're everything I love about the beauty world: playful, whip-smart, trustworthy, appropriately skeptical, questioning. A must-listen.” Martin put it a little more mysteriously, “These two are giving the world access into the underbelly of beauty that no one else has successfully done before.”

Innovator Of The Year

Pat McGrath

Our most prestigious award goes to the person or brand who has managed to delight, excite, amaze, and generally kick some major ass in 2016. And while the field of contenders was one of the most talented yet, it was the incomparable, indefatigable, downright genius Pat McGrath who took home the honor.

Always an innovator, McGrath took us all by surprise this year with the launch of Pat McGrath Labs, super limited-edition products that dropped like a secret Beyoncé album or a new iPhone. Gold 001, Phantom 002, Skin Fetish 003, Lust 004, and the just launched (as in, today) Metamorphosis 005 all hit the internet to great fanfare, then immediately sold out. Kylie Lip Kits have nothing on these guys in terms of lust-worthiness.

Gushed Ess, “[Innovator] of the year? Try of the decade. This woman is just unreal. She has paved the way for so many, and she's having the best time doing it.” Added McIntyre, “She’s already one of the (if not THE) leading creative minds in the industry — and way nicer and more charming than anyone as talented as her has any right to be. She just keeps getting better every year. I’m anxiously awaiting products 006 and beyond, just to see what she’ll dream up next. And anyone that packages her products in a bag full of sequins is automatically my favorite person.” Obviously.

Dry Shampoo That Will Hide Your Too-Hungover-To-Take-A-Shower Hair

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

The product is called Perfect Hair Day, and it has 100% earned that moniker. The R29 beauty team was already enamored with it (“It makes your hair look clean, adds volume, and actually smells good,” said McIntyre), and after a few sprays, the rest of our judging panel was, too. Its high-tech formula absorbs oil and sweat — something most dry shampoos don’t. A fancy-sounding molecule then helps remove the oil-and-sweat-soaked powder, so that when you shake out your hair, all that gunk goes with it and you are left with the closest thing to clean hair you can get outside of a shower.

As Ess said, “Some dry shampoos end up making your hair feel dirtier. This won't do that, and it lasts all day.”

Styling Product That Can Conquer A Traumatic Bad-Hair Day

Ouai Texturizing Hair Spray

The Kardashians’ go-to stylist Jen Atkin is more than a one-Kim pony. She also happens to have one of the most buzzed-about new lines of 2016: Ouai. This hybrid spray is described as what would happen if a dry shampoo and a hairspray had a baby. That offspring would be a featherweight hairspray that also volumizes hair and adds texture and a hint of grit. Polymers give it its flexibility, while volcanic ash is the secret oil sucker-upper.

Said Marshall, “This creates the perfect slept-in, model-off-duty texture.” Sold.

Crunch-Free Hairspray To Lock In Your ‘Do

R+Co Vicious Strong Hold Flexible Hairspray

Strong-hold and flexible don’t seem like they belong in the same sentence, especially when you’re talking about a hairspray. And yet, here we are. Besides having one of the most visually arresting packages on the market (Who wouldn’t want that peeking out of their hair stash?), it’s also one of the most advanced products of its kind. It has a polymer blend that provides control and heat-protection, pro vitamin B5 for conditioning and volume-building, and a high-tech holding complex that cements everything in place but still leaves hair touchable, brushable, and moldable.

Ess was so smitten with it, she had to come up with a new word to describe how she felt: “lovesessed.” “It’s hard to find long-lasting, strong hold, and flexibility all in one.” Echoed Czuleger, “It has good hold, but doesn't make your hair feel too crunchy. You can comb through the product, and it is workable.”

Best Under-$20 Hair Buy

Carol’s Daughter Almond Milk Restoring Conditioner

While our judges were wooed by the delicious smell of this rich conditioner, it was the soft, shiny hair it imparted that really sealed the deal. Vitamins, proteins, and, yes, almond milk, soften and repair tortured hair. Because as much as you may try to deny it, that flat iron (or bleach addiction, or quarterly relaxer session) is not doing your mane any favors, no matter how good it looks after.

“I love Carol’s Daughter,” said Halle. “It [has] really nice, natural ingredients and keeps my hair looking nice.” Mars was impressed with its curl-defining properties, while Ess gave it an enthusiastic thumbs-up. “It’s a great, budget-friendly option for restoring moisture to even the driest hair,” Ess said.

Moisturizer So Good, It Should Be Illegal

Shara Shara Honey Bomb All-In-One Ampoule

This was one of the weirdest products we asked our judges to test. It’s a bouncy, semi-liquid gel that’s meant to be used in place of your toner, serum, AND moisturizer. It’s full of things that bees like: propolis, royal jelly, and manuka honey. All of which contribute to the dewy, golden glow it gives your skin. It also didn’t hurt that it comes in a massive jar — a little goes a long way. Pretty much everyone was confounded by it, but once our judges figured out the proper way to use it, they wouldn’t stop praising it.

“It's like jelly on your hands, but when you put it on it's not sticky — it’s nice and nourishing,” said Chloe. “This not only hydrates with a neutral scent, but it also makes for a great makeup primer,” said Martin. He also told us that he loved it so much, he had his assistant dole it out into smaller bottles so he could take it with him on jobs with his celeb clients.

Vampire-Approved Sunscreen

Giorgio Armani Maestro UV Skin Defense Primer Sunscreen SPF 50

When we saw the claims that this luxe liquid is so light and silky we would forget it’s there, we were skeptical. Well, after playing around with it for a few weeks, our judges can confidently say it lives up to the hype. Said Ess, “As the palest judge, this is a big one. I love this stuff. I put it to the test in Palm Springs in July. Enough said.”

What makes this one so unique is that it is engineered to be worn under makeup. It’s made up of a mix of three UV filters that absorb the sun’s rays, and allow it to protect your skin without leaving behind a white cast or film. The result is, as Czuleger said, “Your skin feels like silk.”

“Take It Off, Take It All Off” Cleanser

Simple Micellar Water Makeup Remover Wipes

Whether you love micellar water or think it might be some type of new health-beverage flavor, you can’t go wrong with these wipes from Simple. They do what every good makeup wipe should do — remove makeup, but they don’t make your skin feel sticky. And, because they are micellar, they don’t just wipe things away, but trap and lift makeup, dirt, and oil off your skin.

Said Ess, “I'm a HUGE micellar-water fan. In fact, I haven't really ‘washed’ my face in three years, and it's the best thing I ever did. These are legit.”

Acne? What Acne?

Skyn Iceland Blemish Dots With Salicylic Acid

Remember the good ol’ days when a pimple would pop up and you’d dab on some of that weird pink liquid and go to bed, praying that sucker would shrink down before school? Doesn’t sound so great now, does it? Which is probably why our judges were so enamored with these pimple-fighting stickers. Infused with salicylic acid, tea-tree oil, willow herb, and volcanic ash — all top-notch acne-eradicating ingredients — these clear dots adhere to the skin and get to work killing off that P.acnes bacteria, sopping up oil, and reducing inflammation as you sleep.

Whitefield-Madrano summed it up best: “My 13-year-old self is seriously pissed she didn't have these dots, because they literally got rid of a blemish overnight, without irritation.”

The Face Mask That Would Impress A Skin Wizard

GlamGlow GravityMud Firming Treatment

When something includes an ingredient called “LunarLift” and makes you look like the Tin Man when you put it on, you can’t really be surprised we’d be all over it. The product in question is this lifting and contouring mask from GlamGlow. It’s a metallic-silver peel-off mask that uses a whole host of algae, clay, and kelp to tighten up a droopy visage.

“This foolproof firming mask peels off in one piece,” said Czuleger. “[My] skin felt like baby skin — firm, plump, and refreshed.” Whitefield-Madrano put hers through the ultimate test: peer review. “Without prompting, my boyfriend was all, ‘Your skin looks firm’ after I used it. And the sexy-robot feel made it fun to put on.”

Awake-Faking Eye Cream

Restorsea Pro Line Blur Eye Cream

This is the big guns for crow’s feet. It’s professional-distribution only, so you’ll have to talk to your doc, but according to our judges, it is SO worth it. The key word here is “blur” — while it has some fabulous long-term benefits, it also immediately makes your wrinkles look less pronounced thanks to ingredients like palm oil. It also exfoliates (gently!), which helps with that whole line-eradicating thing.

Another bonus? It doesn’t mess with your makeup. “This really blurred out fine lines around the eyes AND mouth. Layered with makeup on top doesn’t interrupt it,” said Martin. “It has an instant cooling and blurring effect for puffy eyes — makeup applies nicely on top,“ agreed Marshall.

Best Under-$25 Skin Buy

Pixi Glow Peel Pads

Just when we thought Pixi couldn’t make its cult-classic Glow Tonic better, the brand put it in a handy pad formula. The glycolic-acid and rosewater formula was a big hit with McIntyre, who is a self-described peel-a-phobe. “Most peels make my face red and irritated,” she said. “This one got rid of all the dirt, gunk, and oil without making my face sting. My post-acne red marks looked so much less noticeable after only a week.”

But it’s what’s left out of the brand that makes the range a safe haven for those looking to reduce toxicity in their beauty routines; Makeup artist and brand founder Rose-Marie Swift, who counts her tiny Yorkie Frankie as a work buddy (on permanent loan from client Miranda Kerr), is careful to run a band that is cruelty, GMO, nano, soy and gluten-free.

When news of Estée Lauder’s acquisition of Too Faced broke yesterday, some of us couldn’t help but marvel at the $1.45-billion price tag. (It's the most expensive buy to date from the company, after all.) However, others worried about the brand’s widely appreciated cruelty-free status: Would it remain intact under the Estée umbrella?

Too Faced cofounder Jerrod Blandino put the concern to rest, immediately telling WWD, “We will not be animal testing, we will not be going into China, we will not be made to fold into a corporate culture that we do not have. [Estée Lauder Companies] love and respect what we have created and are just going to support us and lift us up, without changing us in any way but great.”

Not only have customers found that reassurance comforting, but the change also gives a new reason to continue supporting the cause. After all, what better way to spark a discussion than by showing mega-conglomerates just how lucrative cruelty-free cosmetics can be? The confusion lies, however, in that there are multiple labeling systems that indicate whether a company is truly cruelty-free, along with a bevy of carefully worded brand statements against animal testing that actually allow for the practice in some instances. So even for those looking to support cruelty-free brands, they’re not always easy to identify.

So we've identified them for you. We've rounded up a few of our favorite cruelty-free beauty brands that are either independently owned or owned by a parent company and don't engage in animal testing with either raw or finished materials and products, contract other parties to test on animals on its behalf, or sell any products in countries where animal testing is required. Some are drugstore brands, others luxe — but they’re all offering the kind of pigment payoff that’s certifiably lust-worthy, no matter where you stand on the issue.

RMS Beauty

This indie beauty brand has a massive cult following, thanks to skin-friendly formulations that use organic, virgin coconut oil and other naturals as their base. The range has quickly become a safe haven for those looking to reduce toxicity in their beauty routines. Makeup artist and founder Rose-Marie Swift has said her ultimate goal is to run a brand that is cruelty-, GMO-, nano-, soy-, and gluten-free.

RMS Beauty Swift Eye Shadow, $20, available at RMS Beauty.

RMS Beauty Magic Luminizer, $38, available at RMS Beauty.

RMS Beauty Lip Shine, $25, available at RMS Beauty.

Wet N Wild

Who knew that one of our go-to drugstore makeup brands is cruelty-free? All the more reason to love it: This super-affordable line and its parent company, Markwins International, are even endorsed by PETA as being cruelty-free.

Wet n Wild 6 Piece Brush Set, $10, available at Wet n Wild.

Wet n Wild Au Naturel Palette, $7, available at Wet n Wild.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Rainbow Highlighter, $5, available at Wet n Wild.

Ellis Faas

We’ve long appreciated this brand — which was created by legendary makeup artist Ellis Faas — for its universally flattering lipsticks, eyeshadows, and foundation. Even better, since its inception, the independently owned, Amsterdam-based company has been cruelty-free; it tests on “supermodels only.”

Ellis Faas Skin Veil Foundation, $90, available at Ellis Faas.

Ellis Faas Hot Lips, $35, available at Ellis Faas.

Ellis Faas Eye Lights, $42, available at Ellis Faas.

Antonym Cosmetics

We don't know what we love more: The beautiful (and sustainable) bamboo boxes that house Antonym’s powder blushes, foundations, and eyeshadow quads; the brand’s ridiculously soft (and vegan) brushes; or the fact that everything made by the company is eco-minded and cruelty-free.

Antonym Cosmetics Certified Organic Quattro Eyeshadow, $39, available at Antonym Cosmetics.

Antonym Cosmetics Kabuki Brush, $26, available at Antonym Cosmetics.

Antonym Cosmetics Certified Organic Baked Blush, $36, available at Antonym Cosmetics.

Essence Cosmetics

This German-based drugstore brand doesn’t only say no to animal testing, it also practices transparency in explaining how and why: Like other brands on this list, it does not sell in China (where animal testing on cosmetics is required) and does not use any raw materials tested on animals.

Essence Cosmetics Rock 'n' Doll Duo Stylist Eyeliner Pen, $3, available at Essence Cosmetics.

Essence Cosmetics How to Make Brows Wow Make-Up Box, $10, available at Essence Cosmetics.

Essence Cosmetics All About Eyeshadow Palette, $5.49, available at Essence Cosmetics.

Cover FX

Makeup artists swear by this line’s vast range of foundation shades and customizable options, which make skin tone-matching a breeze. And editors can’t get enough of the brand’s skin-care boosters. But there’s more to love: It’s also free of parabens, mineral oil, fragrance, talc, and gluten — as well as cruelty-free and PETA-approved.

Cover FX Custom Cover Drops, $44, available at Cover FX.

Cover FX Correct Click, $18, available at Cover FX.

Cover FX Blotting Powder, $24, available at Cover FX.

Chantecaille

Lots of luxury brands are owned by big conglomerates, but not this one. Instead, it's woman-owned, vegan, cruelty-free, and free of any animal byproducts. What’s more, it develops products that support animal conservation, like this year’s lion cause.

Chantecaille Lion Palette, $85, available at Chantecaille.

Chantecaille Mermaid Eye Color, $34, available at Chantecaille.

Chantecaille Matte Chic Lip Color, $39, available at Chantecaille.

Why Are There So Many More Yellow Skittles In The Skittles Bag?

$
0

I'm going to say something kind of controversial, so brace yourself. The only Skittles flavor that's worth a damn is red. We're, of course, strictly talking traditional here — not Wild Berry, not Tropical. After red, I'd say I have some tolerance for purple and, to a lesser extent, green and orange. But seriously, don't even waste my time with yellow. I've done some very unscientific polling, and it turns out a lot of people share my contempt for yellow Skittles. So why do there always seem to be so many in each bag?

This isn't just my imagination multiplying the yellow losers in each Skittles bag. Proof that this is a real phenomenon just came to light in the form of a Reddit post. Feast your eyes on the color-sorted contents of this party-sized Skittles bag.

Color distribution of one more party-sized bag of Skittles [OC]

As you may know by now, redditors are always good for some investigating, and this time was no exception. After the photo was posted last week, users put their heads together to try and get to the bottom of why there were so many more yellow Skittles in a bag. That's when someone posted a video from the Skittles factory. Take a look:

As you may have noticed, when the different Skittles are separated by flavor, there seem to be some rogue yellows among the reds, greens, purples, and oranges. The video convinced many people that this was the reason for so many yellows in each pack. Not everyone was sold on this explanation, though, and I have to say I, too, am skeptical. I want to know why it's the sunny-colored candies that seem to be the only ones breaking free. That's a question I couldn't find the answer to. However, other Reddit users hypothesized that yellow dye is simply the cheapest, so it's used most often. But I can't totally buy into that one.

We still don't have an answer confirmed by Wrigley or any kind of Skittles genius. Still, I feel better knowing I'm not the only one picking through a sea of yellows looking for red.

We Fact-Checked The CW's Abortion Plots: They Were Spot On

$

Abortion is like no-man’s-land on television. Rarely do pregnant characters go through with the medical procedure. Abortion is usually an ominous, unnamed theme hanging over the heads of expecting women on TV. It’s referenced via a quick shot of a “Pregnant? Explore Your Options” pamphlet, or a passing clinic during a stoic car ride.

When abortion does become an explicit part of a character’s story line, it stands in as the ultimate test of her morality. The decision is drawn out and rips characters to shreds as they struggle with the enormity of their situation. In these cases, both the decision and the procedure are meant to be points of major trauma.

It’s this climate that makes the recent abortion narratives on The CW so refreshing. During Friday's episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Paula decides she doesn't want anything to get in the way of her going to law school, so she chooses to have an abortion. It's that simple. In an episode earlier this month, Xo, Jane’s mom on Jane the Virgin, also decides to have an abortion, and it is acknowledged in a similarly matter-of-fact way. Vox did a great job of highlighting why these story lines were so important in the broader landscape of abortion discourse.

But were these depictions realistic? We decided to look at some of the hard facts about abortion to see how Paula and Xo’s stories match up. Turns out, the CW is dead on.

Slate reports that in 2008, over 60% of women who received an abortion already had at least one child, and this was before the recession, which disproportionately affected women heads of households. While many television shows are interested in the ethical tug-of-war that pregnant characters experience in choosing between having a child and some other life staple, like a career, women in the real world are weighing this decision based on how it will affect their child(ren) that already exist. Paula is already going to have to balance motherhood with law school, and a newborn would drastically stretch the time she has to commit to her studies and her children. Xo remembers the sacrifices she had to make raising Jane, which heavily influences her decision to abort.

A 2014 Guttmacher survey showed that roughly 60% of all abortion patients that year were in their 20s. Another 25% were in their 30s, like Paula. At 41, Jane’s mother falls outside these demographics. But most importantly, The CW intentionally moved us away from the scared-teenager abortion trope that is so pervasive on TV.

As for the no-big-deal attitude that the network has been assuming toward the controversial subject? Time cites a study that showed 95% of women who get abortions do not regret their decision. So while it’s certainly one of many big choices that people have to make in their lifetimes, like buying a house or selecting a school for their kids, it doesn’t necessarily need to be blown out of proportion for the purpose of creating TV drama. And we can thank The CW for keeping it cool.

The Internet Loves This Guy Who Showed Up At 2 A.M. To Give His Best Friend A Hug

People are shouting it from the rooftops: Get you a friend like Jeffrey.

Jeffrey is the best friend of teen Nicole Aramboles who showed up at her house at 2 a.m. simply to give her a hug. Aramboles posted about the incident on Twitter and it went viral, being retweeted around 40,000 times and causing people to start shipping the two students, hoping they'll get together.

Buzzfeed reports that 16-year-old Nicole Aramboles was feeling sad on a Friday night, so she told Jeffrey that she “was so tired and wasn’t in a good mood.” He offered to "deliver a hug" and it turns out he was dead serious. Since he lives just five minutes from Nicole, Jeffrey showed up not long after and created the most heartwarming viral moment of 2016.

And that's not the end of the story. Nicole followed up on her original tweet, letting fans know they "got breakfast afterwards so he didn't show up to my house just for a hug" and dispelled rumors by insisting that they're "just best friends he doesn't 'like' me."

That being said, dating Jeffrey is not something Nicole has ruled out.

So of course, the internet is can't stop talking about the duo, cooing over the moment, even if it wasn't romantic.

People are even trying it out themselves.

TBH, this is the story the end of 2016 so desperately needed.

QUESTION: What is the difference between the Unicorn Tears and the other Elixirs? Which one is suitable for my skin type? . ANSWER: The Unicorn Tears is a supplementary product to the day (Rose Gold) and night (Volcanic) Elixirs. It is not an alternative to either of the Elixirs; as it is more of a primary step to your routine. It is oil-free and suitable for all skin types! The main differences between the Unicorn Tears and our Elixirs, is that Unicorn Tears is an oil free serum, rich in antioxidants, and can be used either as a makeup primer, or before applying moisturizer. If used as skincare, the Unicorn Tears (serum) would be applied first, then either of our Elixirs (moisturizer). If used with makeup, the Unicorn Tears would be applied first as a primer for the skin, or as an effective eyeshadow primer. The Rose Gold Elixir (for makeup application) would be used to either blend full-coverage foundation, by applying drops on a beauty sponge/brush (for a glowing finish), or it can be used on the lips prior to using liquid/matte lipsticks, to keep them hydrated for longer wear. . 🦄 NO UNICORNS WERE HARMED BY THE MAKING OF THIS PRODCT 💧 TEARS OF JOY 🦄 CRUELTY FREE . We can't get enough of unicorns — especially when it comes to beauty products. We've seen the mythical creature in the form of makeup brushes, lip glosses, and even cosmetic cases, yet it's never enough. We can't help it; everything about these shimmery goods is mesmerizing, and we love mesmerizing things.

However, it's rare to find a unicorn-inspired product that isn't focused on its external appearance. But now, there's a product hitting the market that's all about what's inside the bottle. Farsali products, an Insta-famous skin-care line, announced that it's launching a new serum called Unicorn Tears (available for pre-order on its website December 7). Naturally, we were intrigued.

Not that we'd ever want to make a unicorn cry, per se — but we've read the stories. Unicorn tears seem like something Harry Potter would toss into a potion. It's got to have a supernatural effect, right? Turns out, this particular elixir is actually a primer. It's meant to work in tandem with Farsali's popular volcanic serum — which is meant to douse the dermis with antioxidants — and also works as pre-foundation prep.

While we're still waiting with bated breath for more info on pricing, so far this formula sounds magical. Or, at least, pretty damn close.

Would your S.O. be cool with it if you turned up with your eyebrows shaved? Of course, we'd all love to believe they love us for us...but you never know, right?

According to BuzzFeed, 17-year-old Lizette Galvan from Fort Worth, Texas, had the genius idea to test out this theory after watching a YouTube tutorial of someone transforming into Yoda — and the results are hilarious. Here’s how it went down: With the help of a glue stick, translucent powder, setting powder, orange concealer, and full-coverage concealer, Galvan temporarily erased one of her eyebrows, then texted her man to share the news.

“'Bout to shave my brows,” she wrote. Her boyfriend responded with a simple, “Come again?” and then added, “Shave?”

“Yeah, hold up," she typed, before sending a picture with one brow gone.

Naturally, he didn’t believe her at first (because, denial), and typed back, “It's edited.” So she doubled down, sending him a Snap with both brows gone.

His response? “Babe. WTF.”

“Yeah,” she wrote back, explaining that she was trying new brow shapes.

“Baaaaabe,” he typed. We can just feel his anguish in each extraneous letter.

Her response? A texted picture of some pretty cartoonish brows drawn on — along with a big smile. Got 'em.

After she shared the entire ordeal on Twitter, fans couldn't get enough.

Others took pity on her poor boyfriend and saluted his chill.

If you're wondering how said boyfriend reacted to the prank? Galvan told BuzzFeed that the couple was “able to laugh about it.” Which is nice to hear; after all, all is fair in love and war (and beauty).

Kelly Clarkson Says Motherhood Made Her "Next Level Confident"

Kelly Clarkson has four children and is very happy. That wasn't always the case, she tells Good Housekeeping. Initially, fame put her in a "very dark place." But she's found happiness in her husband, her two stepchildren, and the two children she's borne.

She tells the magazine that she constantly thinks of giving up her singing life. She likes the actual singing, and meeting fans, but hates traveling away from her family.

"Oh, all the time. I mean, I'm always going to be a singer, but the level I'm at…I have constant guilt," Clarkson tells Good Housekeeping. "I don't have to work; I think it's because I have that option that I feel the guilt. But it's important for my girls, especially, to see me as a woman accomplishing all these things while nailing it as a mom. I always come back to that."

Not only that, but motherhood has changed her life in positive personal ways.

"I sound like such a tool, but becoming a mother has made me next-level confident," Clarkson tells Good Housekeeping. "I've never felt more empowered. I feel like my 20s were spent walking on eggshells making sure everyone felt loved and not really expressing my opinion. As a mom, you just don't have time, so you get straight to the point. I go to bed every night and the list of what I've accomplished is astounding."

Not to sound like Liz Lemon, but Kelly Clarkson apparently really can have it all. All of it except writing for a failing sketch comedy show starring two talented but troubled goofballs that can't stop getting into wacky hijinks while she tries to keep her stern but kind boss happy. But we're sure that's available, if she wants it.

Amber Heard made a rare public appearance Monday night for a great cause. She showed up to help Emily Doe, the survivor of the famous Brock Turner Stanford rape case, accept a Woman of the Year award from Glamour.

As part of the ceremony, she read from the survivor's famous and powerful open letter addressed to the court and her attacker. Lena Dunham, Gabourey Sidibe, and Freida Pinto joined Heard onstage to read parts of the letter as well as the essay Doe wrote about the experience for Glamour.

The essay is powerful even just as words on a page, but having these women read it onstage gives it more of a punch than we remember. Even if you've seen it already, or seen it a few times, you owe it to yourself to watch this.

Heard herself has dealt with violent behavior by men, specifically allegedly her ex Johnny Depp. Their divorce was a mess from beginning to end, including when Heard blasted Depp for attempting to use their settlement as a tax deduction.

Other women honored Monday night included Gwen Stefani, Ashley Graham, Zendaya, and the founders of Black Lives Matter.

Lena Dunham Calls Paul Ryan To Protest Nazi-Hailed Trump Appointment

Lena Dunham won't back down after she was told to, you know, stay the fuck out of Canada. The multimedia powerhouse promised to move up north should Trump win the election. She tried everything to stop him. Rap videos. Halloween costumes. Hell, even voting.

But Trump won and she's still in America, calling Paul Ryan to protest Steve Bannon's appointment to Trump's senior staff. The Girls creator called Ryan's public number (202-225-3031) and let him know that she didn't like how things were headed.

She has a point, Steve Bannon is a notorious racist whose appointment to the cabinet was hailed by American Nazi group Stormfront as a banner day for White Supremacy.

“I’m not sure you’re really going to listen to this,” Dunham says. “But I hope you do, because I want to let you know that as a woman, as a Jew, as a person who cares about other human beings, people of color, the idea of appointing an anti-Semitic white supremacist...”

Dunham's strategy doesn't seem like the most effective one. "Hi, Speaker Ryan, this is Lena Dunham calling," is a sure way to get a Republican to hang up on you so hard he breaks his finger. (Possibly the point?)

Not only that, but the man won't do anything. Ryan famously said he "won't defend" Trump in October but refused to disavow the candidate and is now rolling over and looking for a belly scratch in the form of reappointment to his Speaker of the House position. He didn't even have the gumption of Reince Priebus, who chose his racist demagogue and stuck with him no matter how many sexual assault allegations arose against him.

Give Ryan a call if you want at 202-225-3031.

Ariel Winter Seems Unaware There's More Than One Kardashian-Jenner Daughter

Ariel Winter has a close relationship with Caitlyn Jenner. She explained this in a Snapchat caption, Us Weekly reports. So close, in fact, that Jenner referred to Winter as her "second daughter" when they met at Glamour ’s annual Women of the Year Awards. "She was so sweet!" Winter wrote.

That is sweet, except that Jenner has more than one daughter to begin with, so we're not really sure what she's implying. Even if you don't count the stepdaughters, she's got three. So who was she counting? Kendall? Kylie? The lesser-known Cassandra?

Of course, that was obviously just a slip-up, either on Jenner's part when she said it or on Winter's when she repeated it.

We can't fault either for misspeaking, and it is nice to know the Kardashian-Jenner clan is accepting new members. Our only question is, how do we get in?

How To Feel Better When You Think Your Heartburn Might Kill You

$

Whether you're in the middle of a deliciously greasy slice of pizza or right about to drift off to sleep, heartburn always seems to strike at the worst moments. And once it arrives, there's no ignoring it. When you're experiencing heartburn, it honestly feels like there's a fire in your chest, and it can also bring with it uncomfortable bloating or stomach pains.

The explanation for why this happens is pretty straightforward. "Normally, we chew food, swallow it, it goes into our esophagus, and it should go down into the stomach to spend time getting digested," says Felice Schnoll-Sussman, MD, a gastroenterologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital who is also director of The Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health at Weill Cornell Medicine. But "in some people, for a variety of reasons, the food or fluid or acid that's in the stomach may not stay in the stomach."

In fact, the awful sensation we know as heartburn is just one symptom of acid reflux, a common condition in which stuff from your stomach finds its way upwards, Dr. Schnoll-Sussman says. The good news: There are some very simple things you can do to make it happen less frequently.

Most commonly, reflux happens because the sphincter at the bottom of your esophagus weakens or relaxes too often, Dr. Schnoll-Sussman explains. When that happens, the sphincter can't keep what's in your stomach from getting into the esophagus — where it can cause that classic burning sensation and, possibly, do some damage to the esophageal lining.

That definitely sounds kind of gross and scary, but reflux is actually incredibly common, even among babies and kids. People who are pregnant often experience reflux, because the growing uterus puts extra pressure on the stomach. Weight gain can make reflux more likely for similar reasons.

For most people, a little heartburn every once in a while isn't anything to worry about. Although it's unpleasant, over-the-counter medications and (if necessary) changes in diet are enough to treat most cases, explains Dr. Schnoll-Sussman.

"However, there are some negative consequences of long-standing reflux," she says. If your reflux becomes chronic, it turns into gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can cause inflammation, scarring, or ulcers in the esophagus. The most worrying possibility, though, is the development of a condition called Barret's esophagus, which, in a small subset of patients, can go on to become esophageal cancer.

So, if you have reflux that doesn't go away no matter what you do, or you notice you're starting to have trouble swallowing, or you have to change the size of the food you eat in order to swallow, see your doctor. She can do tests, prescribe medications, and suggest diet changes to help get your esophagus back in working order before you develop even more serious complications.

But, again, over-the-counter remedies and small changes do the trick for most people. So, click through to see a few of Dr. Schnoll-Sussman's tips for preventing and treating that awful feeling.

1. Stop eating that meal.

If you're having heartburn while eating a meal, the first step is to just stop eating. Not all reflux can be blamed on food choices, says Dr. Schnoll-Sussman, but if you notice you get heartburn consistently after having the same foods, consider cutting back on those. The classic foods to watch out for include coffee, alcohol, chocolate, peppermint, tomato-based products, and any fried or otherwise fatty foods.

Photographed by Eric Helgas.

2. Try over-the-counter meds.

It may seem obvious, but over-the-counter medications can ease the vast majority of reflux episodes — and there's a ton of variety out there you may not have thought about. Seriously, we're not just talkin' Tums. There are also medications that reduce the production of acid (e.g. Zantac, Pepcid) and those that help heal the esophagus (e.g. Prilosec).

However, if you're still having issues after trying these for 14 days, it's worth checking in with your doctor to see if it's time to bring out the big, prescription guns, such as stronger proton-pump inhibitors, which reduce acid production.

Photographed by Jessica Nash.

3. Don't forget to drink water.

As with most gastrointestinal issues, one key to preventing reflux is to keep things moving along. And drinking water is a huge piece of that. But, if you're experiencing heartburn right this second, drinking water can make you feel better because it will wash some of the irritating acid out of the esophagus, explains Dr. Scholl-Sussman.

Photographed by Kate McCurdy.

4. Don't eat right before bed.

It's much, much easier for reflux to happen if you lay down right after eating because you no longer have gravity on your side. So, not eating before you go to bed (when you know you're going to be laying down for a while) is "single-handedly the best thing you can do," says Dr. Schnoll-Sussman. She advises patients not to eat for at least an hour before going to bed, but ideally that's two hours.

Photographed by Rockie Nolan.

5. Go for a walk after eating.

"Food typically exits the stomach within half an hour," explains Dr. Schnoll-Sussman. But, for some people, the process takes a little longer. And that backup can create the perfect conditions for reflux. "For those people, just taking a simple walk can absolutely help with the movement of the food," she says.
