The Coolest Updos You Need To Win Prom Night

Fame is fickle — and it isn't guaranteed. Meaning that your likelihood of attending a big red carpet event could be slim, but that's why prom is so much fun. It's a way to primp and prep like the true star that you are, hang out with your entourage, and (over) document the entire thing on social media.

While your outfit and accessories are important, you can't forget about the true pièce de résistance: your hair. Yeah, you might frequent your local blow dry bar all the time, but come on — that isn't nearly as fun as getting a fancy updo at a salon. That's why we rounded up a list of prom-ready styles suitable for every length and texture.

Bookmark this page and show it to your stylist, or check out our breakdowns to try them out yourself at home: no corsage required.

Hair Jewelry

Who said you need a tiara to be a prom queen? Accent your updo with a necklace that you already have to stand out from the royal court.

Step 1: Divide your hair into three sections: two in the front, and one large section in the back.

Step 2: Work an oil, styling cream, texture powder, or teasing dust — depending on what works best for your hair texture — through the front sections.

Step 3: Braid or twist the first front section back, then secure with a clip to temporarily hold it in place. Repeat on the other side.

Step 4: Join the two front sections and the back section into a low bun. Add pins and product as needed to keep everything in place throughout the style.

Step 5: Add your jewelry as desired — and you're done!

Curly Bun

No need to hide your true texture. This style allows you to embrace your hair and pump up the volume. Straight locks? Simply curl all your hair with a 1-inch iron before starting.

Step 1: Section off the front part of your hair.

Step 2: Create a ponytail with the remainder, then pin to make a loose bun.

Step 3: Section your hair in the front, making one side fuller.

Step 4: Take the smaller section of hair, tease it, and pin it back towards the bun.

Step 5: Tease the remaining section of your hair and pin it back towards the bun.

Step 6: Spray the hair left out and pin back towards the bun leaving it a little loose.

Low Romantic Bun

Long-haired ladies and gents, this one's for you.

Step 1: Create a soft middle or side part, and leave out an inch of hair on both sides.

Step 2: Pull your leftover hair into a ponytail, and tease the top. Secure with a rubber band.

Step 3: Tuck your ponytail and pin it down with a bobby pin.

Step 4: Take your front section and pull it back, twisting both ends around your ponytail. Pin both ends.

Curls Topped With A Headband

Yet another way to wear a tiara without actually buying a crown. Plus, you're a queen anyway.

Step 1: Curl or style your hair as desired.

Step 2: Add your headband of choice, and touch up the pieces that frame your headband to create complementing curls or waves.

Bun With Extensions

Since you'll probably be dancing the night away, you won't want fussy Rapunzel-like extensions flowing down your back (unless you're bringing along your own personal hair blowing fan, a la Beyoncé). Instead, pin them up and create a regal bun. All the better to show off your killer dangling earrings, my dear.

Step 1: Using a pomade, smooth your hair into a high bun.

Step 2: Wrap hair extensions that match your color and texture around the base to create a high ponytail.

Step 3: Create a two-strand twist, and wrap it around the base for a voluminous bun. Secure with bobby pins.
